  • Barry: Good Morning Everyone
  • Ltjgcag: Good Morning All!  Finally back from  a sojourn to the Crowsnest.  Not sure I wanted to leave there though!
  • 1four5: Another great gig tonight... good morning, and now I’m going to bed!
  • 1four5: You inventors want an idea? Take the small portable PA systems, and put monitors into the main speaker cabinets, pointed back at the band.
  • Dan: Zane, are you headed off, too?
  • Dan: I've sold a few inventions, but I hold no patents.
  • Dan: I'll send you the documentation offline if you're interested.  Read the proposal that I sent to a major manufacturer, adn cmopare it to a recent product...
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: good night Dan
    Today at 01:13:38 AM
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: But I also have patents out.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: I get ripped off alot too.
  • Dan: Yeah, and if you ever want to discuss some things in detail, contact me through a private message.  I've already had one idea swiped...
  • banjo_chick: Good night gentlemen.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: It's been fun.
  • Dan: Good night.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: It's bed time for bonzo
    Today at 01:09:24 AM
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: OK Dan and Zane.. It
    Today at 01:09:03 AM
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: He was striving for long sustain.
  • Dan: BTW, I do ahve an idea how carbon fiber can be used in banjo (or guitar0 building, and if you're serious about getting a patent contact me in a less public way.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: The Les Paul prototype was made from a railroad tie.
  • Dan: I have an Epi Les Paul...It might be a little lighter than a Gibson.
  • banjo_chick: You mean Les Pauls guitar not Les Paul himself right?
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Gibson Les Paul weighs a ton too.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Dan.. I agree.. at my old job.. I use design alignment tools made from case hardened steel... one of the reasons I love the banjo is its mechanics.
  • Dan: Banjos are insanely heavy.  A light banjo weights as much as a light bowling ball, and a heavy banjo weighs as much as a heavy bowling ball.
  • Dan: I have a pot (froman old Epiphone) that has a wooden tone ring, but all of the other parts are aluminium.  I'm going to replace the rim with one of my own (mahogany to cut down on the weight).
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Iv had the "sears" aluminium banjo for 40 years.. it's light and has a great action.. I wouldnt record with it.. but it doesnt cut of the circulation to my shoulder.
  • Dan: Jim, you need to come to my shop and help me tinker.  I make many prototypes.  you might find it fun.
  • Dan: I think aluminum is a great choice for a lot fo the metal components and I don't know why it isn't used more often.
  • Dan: There was some talk of carbon resonators here:  http://www.banjohangout.org/archive/202354
    Today at 12:47:50 AM
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: light as a feather.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: I have an aluminium camping banjo.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: No windows..
  • Dan: FYI, carbon fiber rims are already in production (VanceBanjos.Com).  No word on fiber resonators, although Bakelite resonators have been around for decades.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: My biggest fear was playing in bars with now windows and one exit and faulty electricity.
  • Dan: Something liek that.  The power was on full (or nearly full) during the sound check, but when we went to perform they dimmed some of the lights and there was just a trickle of power, not enough to fire up the system.
  • banjo_chick: Hanging up now.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: so everytime the lights dimmed.. the sound lowered?
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Hang up Zane.. NOW
    Today at 12:41:48 AM
  • Dan: Actually, the system itself was fine.  The outlet that supplied the power to it was routed through the light board, which meant that ti was on a dimmer system.
  • banjo_chick: Hold on, Im on the phone with my patent lawyer.
  • banjo_chick: You need a back up system for your back up system.
  • Dan: BTW, Zane, remember we were discussing the possible problems with sound systems?  Everything that could go wrong did go wrong last night.  There were problems with the house system AND with my backup system.
  • Dan: I'm pretty sure that the concept of the carbon fiber banjo is already out there.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: You better not.
  • Dan: What idea?
  • banjo_chick: Not boring, But I may steal your idea
    Today at 12:31:29 AM
  • Dan: Zane, I am sorry if we're boring the living daylights out of you...
  • Dan: You're making parts for the space program, right?
  • Dan: The necks I'm building now are a tad heavy, but they have hardly any flex.
  • Dan: If the whole neck was made of carbon fiber it would be a different story, but I couldn't achieve enough stiffness with a carbon fiber truss rod.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Everything we make is metal and plated with either gold, silver, or nickel plating.
  • Dan: Have you ever worked with carbon fiber?  We purchased some a year ago to try and stablize banjo necks, but there was a surprising amount of flex.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Iv dealt with commercial platers and CNC machinist, Iv only read about Carbon fiber.
  • Dan: It would be a carbon fiber head, amd you eliminate the hardware that way, but the tone would be very different.
  • Dan: You might be able to pull it off.  I'm a gadgeteer, not an engineer.
  • Dan: That's not to say that here aren't advantages to a carbon fiber banjo.  It would be much more stable than wood and the fingerboard would not be subject to wear...
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: I'll have to research that one.
  • Dan: How would you tigthen the head?  A heli-mount system would work, but that is patented...
  • Dan: The banjo in the photo is really light. The part of the rim that extends into the resonator is thinner than rest of the rim, plus it has a simple brass tone hoop.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: right, that's why it has to be all one piece neck and body.. only the head and tuners would be metal.
  • Dan: A carbon fiber banjo would be stronger than wood, but not neceswsarily lighter because most of the weight of the banjo is in the metal components.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Now we have a product and a slogan.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: Creative thinking on your part Zane.
  • banjo_chick: "It takes a lickin', but it keeps on pickin'"
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: That's where my dream carbon fiber banjo would come in handy.. it would be light as a feather and stronge as an ox.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: It's great but Gibson instruments weigh a ton.
  • banjo_chick: Iv played the RB-250 it has a nice thin neck, so easy to play.
  • Dan: model.
  • Dan: Mine is a later (1970's
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: The RB-100 has a thicker neck than the RB-250
    Today at 12:02:17 AM
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: I played my brothers RB-100 in the hangout video.. he had it gold plated... infact I bought him the keith tuners for it as a B day present.
  • Dan: No, that a Gibson RB 100, but they sound about the same.
  • banjo_chick: did you play the banjo that's in your profile for that song?
  • Dan: Thanks.
  • woodstocks_other_banjo: I like it too.
  • banjo_chick: I like it. It's a sea ballard.
  • Dan: Don't get your hopes up...
  • banjo_chick: I'll check it out.
  • Dan: BTW Zane, I did post a song...
  • banjo_chick: as a matter of fact I did Dan.

Why aren't there corporate sponsors?

At the outset, the administrators of the Banjo Holler decided to forgo any corporate sponsorship of the site.  We feel this will allow us to remain unbiased and avoid the appearance of bias in favor of specific businesses.  We are able to maintain the site because the server and bandwidth have been donated by New England Media. These businesses however will have no financial stake in the site.

Why is the Fireworks Board limited in membership? How do I gain access to this board?

The Fireworks board is intended for "mature audiences" and therefore has limited access. Members must contact either an administrator (admin@banjoholler.com) or moderator (mods@banjoholler.com) via email and request permission to access this board.  Once on the board, the member should be aware that they may find some postings offensive.  The board is moderated, but to a lesser degree than other boards on the site.  If you are easily offended, then do not access this board. Regardless of the restrictions, pornography and obscene material will not be allowed anywhere on the Banjo Holler site.
